The Beatles + Line of Reasoning

image

I'm not sure if something shifted in the cosmos, but I feel like I have my students working at a whole other level of excellence this year.

In today's writing workshop video, you'll first see what happens when you teach students critical theory such as New Criticism and Deconstruction.

It is my firm contention that these two lenses are essential to performing literary analysis.

And the kicker - the concepts are pretty easy, so even my on-level 9th graders can grasp the essential learnings.

From here, we yet again work on strategies to sustain that pesky line of reasoning.

From start to finish, I "Bob Ross" how to write a literary analysis for "Here Comes the Sun" and "Come Together."

My students, in turn, choose any lyric of their liking for their analysis.

Explicitly teaching students how to sustain their lines of reasoning takes yeoman's work and a bit of creative ingenuity.

The Abbey Road analogy I make in the video is just one of many tricks I have up my sleeve that really work in terms of solidifying the concept.

On December 10th at 11 a.m EST live in Zoom, the National Writing Project and I will be teaming up to offer my Teaching Line of Reasoning 2-Hour Intensive.

Replays will be made available - and for those of you needing PD hours - NWP will be awarding a completion badge for this session.

During our time together, we will explore how my templates of the declarative/inverted thesis, as well as the syllogistic method, can be used uniformly across the expository modes as a means to help students capture their brillant thinking on paper.

We'll look at everything from using classic children's stories as a scaffold, my edible graphic organizers and templates, even some gamification strategies I've developed over the years.

Hoping to see you there!!

Happy teaching and happy writing!!
