Teaching Voice & Nuance

image

Imagine the following scenario …

Your school administrator asks you to create a "Dream Team" roster of students to take both the AP Literature and Language exams …

But here’s the kicker – your students must be Hollywood famous!

Who are you suiting up? Who has the “chops” to rock a top qualifying score?

Who is a slam dunk “5”?!

Here are my top five picks for the "Dream Team" AP exam roster:

1.      Adult narrator Ralph (A Christmas Story)

2.      Adult narrator Kevin Arnold (The Wonder Years)

3.      Rory (Gilmore Girls)

4.      Chris Stevens (Northern Exposure)

5.      Carrie Bradshaw (Sex in the City)

Why these five you ask?

The common denominator in my Dream Team is this…each character possesses something that is so elusive…something so hard to teach our students …

The nuance ability to teeter-totter a voice that balances the academic (Tier II vocabulary) with the colloquial and vernacular.

Consider, as an example, Ralph’s following musings on the karmic consequences of his foul diction:

“Over the years I got to be quite a connoisseur of soap. Though my personal preference was for Lux, I found that Palmolive had a nice, piquant after-dinner flavor - heavy, but with a touch of mellow smoothness.”

I love it when students can carry a voice like this! This is the ultimate goal.

But how do you help a student master the basics of grammar, punctuation, and syntax to conquer nuance?

And how can you help a student elevate and master their verbiage to the level Ralph does in the example above?

Join me on Tuesday July 12th at 7 p.m. EST for my Nuance Academy Short Course training. The Nuance Academy is a 90-minute live training that will show you how to create a star-studded cast of student writers!

Happy teaching and happy writing!
