Some things in life become significantly better when they are paired with a powerful partner.
Take, for example, popcorn. Popcorn is so much better with a good movie!
And how about a campfire? Throw in s'mores and a scary ghost story ...now we're talking!
By itself, vocabulary instruction is good ... but it's missing something.
It's like having your favorite box of cereal without having any milk.
But what does word study need to partner with?
Voice lessons.
So many of our students buy into the erroneous notion that big words yield good writing.
But when our students try to stretch their academic ethos in their writing, they often sound as if they're trying too hard ... their voices sound contrived ... even pretentious ... they get way outside of their natural wheelhouses.
Augmenting student's vocabularies is a crucial ingredient in terms of helping them to grow and mature as writers, but they also need tons of practice honing their academic voices.
In today's video, I demonstrate how to help students acquire the Tier II vocabulary they need to become adept academic writers as they cultivate their authentic and best voices.
