Gamifying Word Study

image

Our students are pleading with us to up the engagement meter.

And this is perhaps the biggest reason why being a secondary ELA teacher feels a bit like a Ringling Brothers Circus performance.

We’re juggling entire pedagogical worlds … even that thing known as pandemic learning … and now we also need to ensure that our instructional approaches aren’t a quick ticket to Snoozeville?

No wonder so many of us are burnt to a crisp!

In opening the vault of my gamification methods, I’ve been asked the following questions quite a bit:

1.      Doesn’t gamifying slow down instruction?

2.      What gets sacrificed in the curriculum?

The truth of the matter is this …

With regards to my Word Study Academy and Nuance Academy – we are able to cover so much more content, delve deeper, and rachet up the engagement while sacrificing not a thing.

In today’s video, look at how quickly students learn a bevvy of Tier II level words.

Word Slam Video!!

And the kicker – assessment becomes a breeze when you adopt these methods and practices.

The research is clear – students learn best when we incorporate the elements of collaboration and competition into our instructional practices.

If you would like to learn these innovative strategies to teach vocabulary, then definitely check out my Word Study Academy.

We will be meeting live in Zoom Tuesday June 28th at 7 p.m. EST.

Happy teaching and happy writing!
