Just writing to let you know that I put more gifts of the season on my YouTube channel 😊
For the AP Language folks, and anyone else looking for a high interest synthesis unit, I have something really fun for you and your students.
Imagine this … I sent students home to read five articles based upon the sociology and psychology of teenage dating - then I asked them to watch any two episodes of MTVs hit show Parental Control. For those without streaming services – no need to worry – YouTube has everything covered … and for free.
But here’s what’s really cool. I asked my students to give dating advice from the perspective of a therapist to a main character in one of the episodes. Given that the sources are anchored in theory, the students are able to cop a solid academic tone resembling that of a qualified counselor.
Per usual, I hosted a writing workshop whereby I “Bob Ross-ed” my instruction for the students.
The video is posted on YouTube. Here’s the link:

If you’d like the articles we used as source material, simply email me at [email protected]
And for my AP Lit. friends … I have something you might find to be of interest as well.
As of yet, I haven’t posted any videos centering upon FRQ2.
So, here you have it … a writing workshop video featuring the 2021 passage – “Breath” by Thomas Winton.
Just like all my other videos, I “paint” through the essay for you and your students demonstrating how to incorporate my templates.
Here’s the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFYd9CYw0_Y
And I hope you see the real beauty of these templates … new essay … same old templates … nothing ever changes … the writing process is completely demystified... Voila... Your kids are cranking out terrific essays.
Lastly, a lot of folks have reached out to me with regards to the textbook that Timm Freitas and I are writing together. We’re plugging away, so sit tight.
With regards to my portion, yes – I am looking for a few teachers to participate in my Teach It “Write” 5-Week Mastermind. As the title suggests, we’ll meet for five consecutive Sunday evenings for an hour a pop. Participants will become super well versed in the implementation of my templates (and even learn my alternative grading methods). Together, we will build units of instruction and I will look over your shoulder as you begin to teach my templates while your students start to employ them in their writing. Ultimately, in working together, we will just monitor the effectiveness of my methods on your classroom instruction. There are a few more moving parts involved in this and I could go on and on – so, if you want more specifics – please reach out or visit my webpage at

And oh yeah … if the FRQ2 folks want the PowerPoint that accompanies the video – just drop me a line and I’ll pass that on to you.
Just a few more weeks left before another break. Hang in there and continue to fight the good fight!
Happy teaching and happy writing!
