A staple concept of both my Word Study and Nuance Academies is that the things of voice, rhythm, and flow can be taught if the teaching is explicit and deliberate.
And going one step further ...
That elusive point of sophistication and the things of pizazz, wow, and flair are all writing traits that are in reach of every single student.
This past weekend on CBS Sunday Morning, David Sedaris left a perfect lesson plan in our laps.
In brief, he presented a concise monologue entitled "On Irritating Word Choices."
It's brilliant!!
In today's video lesson, my students and I use his monologue as a template to draft our own veritable soliloquies.
Per usual, I "Bob Ross" an example in the video in hopes of demystifying how to tackle the assignment.
This was a fun way to practice the cultivation of student voice with a crash course on diction analysis.
My kiddos are getting a little weary of the chronic essay writing grind, so this was a welcome reprieve that packed a solid pedagogical punch.
Seats are filling up for the Teach It "Write" 5-Week Mastermind that the National Writing Project and I are hosting.
We begin this Sunday night at 7 EST live in Zoom.
Hoping to have a packed house.
Happy teaching and happy writing!
