Sidestepping the ELA Pain Points

image

This past week, I set sail with my daughter on one heck of a whirlwind college tour that ended with a visit to my alma mater -- Brown University.

During my time there, I was blessed to work with some fantastic educators that I idolized and deeply admired.

Chief among them was Theodore Sizer.

I remember sitting in his office griping about having to hunker in for the weekend to grade papers.

In quintessential Ted fashion, he said ... "Find a better way ... traditional grading is for the birds!"

Find a better way.

I've been doing that now for 20 years.

There's a better way to get students to truly grow and mature as writers.

There's a better way to build foundational literacies.

There's a better way to teach voice, rhythm, and flow.

There's a better way to address student disengagement and apathy.

There's a better way to ensure that your content and material is engaging.

There's a better way to give students the key to the door of everything.

There's a better way to tackle the new "normal" of our classroom existences.

With rare exception, of the hundreds of teachers I've worked with this summer, they uniformly say the same thing ...

Last year was the toughest of them all.
