[BE SURE TO SEE THE GIVEAWAY BELOW!]

SO FAR, SO GOOD THIS YEAR, HEALTH WISE

On January 17, last year, I was admitted to the hospital from the ER and spent 4 days there beginning to get well. It took until November, so I expect that, in that aspect of my life, things will go better this year. They had better!

A WORD ABOUT LOS ANGELES

***Of course, I’m heartbroken about what has happened in California. I feel I have a reason for my sorrow, besides empathy for those suffering losses, because I was born there. I have no roots in the area, because my mother left there with me when I was 3 months old. But, still, I kept checking to see if the Good Samaritan Hospital on Wilshire Boulevard was I danger. It never was. I hope everyone knows where to donate to help out. One place is World Central Kitchen, the organization headed up by Jose Andres to feed people around the world. wck.org.

WHAT’S NEW

***My daffodils are peeking out of the ground! I planted 300 when we first moved here in 2013 and they’ve multiplied a bit. Those and Shasta daisies are my favorites. I MUST plant some new daisies. Some caretakers for the yard ripped them all up a couple of years ago—thought they were weeds! That disheartened me and I didn’t replant them, but I miss them so much, I do need to do that.

***See my banner, above? The folks at Rowan Prose Publishing made that for me, in anticipation of my April 15th release.

***My toe surgery in November was worth it, I decided. The pin came out of my middle toe early, but that got me out of the boot early! It looks a little off-kilter, but feels good. Not missing this thing at all!

imageGIVEAWAY!

***A friend of mine does this, and I decided I should, too. I have a copy of CHOKE, newly issued by White City Press, for someone who sends in the answer to this question.

Who is your favorite fictional sleuth?

I think Imogene Duckworthy, the star of this series, might be mine. CHOKE is the first book in the series mentioned above, with BROKE being the third. There are four in all. So far.

WHAT’S COMING UP NEXT

***That suspense novel, SOMEONE IS OUT THERE, is coming in April! April 1st, April Fools Day, but no fooling, it really is.

***Also, my short story will be in this horror anthology, AFTER DARK, coming out 9/22/25:

WHAT I’M DOING

***I’ve finished work on a short story to be turned in on the 20th. If it makes its way into the anthology, I’ll let you know here.

***Working on taxes. So fun!

***Looking forward to getting back to working on the second Comfy Cat novel. The first one has been turned in to White City Press. No edits or release date yet.

ONE MORE THING

***You may or may not know that I used to be a mainframe programmer, or systems analyst if you want the fancy title. I coded for life insurance companies most of my time, until I started contract work. But while I was doing the regular office job, going to work each day (and raising three kids and some cats and a dog—and a husband), we took turns covering the night shift. That’s when the programs ran and updated the data with the input that had been done during the day by various office workers around the country. If you were on call and a system came down, you could try to solve the problem from home with an old, slow, dial-up monitor, or you could drive in and work faster there. I called those Hero Trips.

Well, I got to make a Hero Trip January 3rd. My son’s family was driving home from Disney World to Knoxville and their ancient SUV gave up about 30 short of their home, which is 10 minutes from mine. It was late at night and my daughter-in-law called me with obvious distress coming over the phone. Could I rescue them? Of course, I could! I have these nifty amber glasses that make it easy to drive at night. I just had to find the place, since they weren’t quite sure where they were. But the 18-year-old granddaughter was able to get a GPS position and send it to me.

I’m not going to go into business rescuing highway travelers, but it was fun for one night. It was cold out and they were glad of my warm car. Each one of the 5 thanked me quite a few times.

WHAT I SHOULD BE DOING

***Shopping for Valentines, right? Is it too early?
