I'm seeing the cracks start to expand in traditional content marketing.


I was chatting with a VP of marketing this week who reached out to me about putting together a content marketing job description for a new role.


This is a senior position on his team. 


I asked him: Are you looking for a more "traditional" content marketer with blogging/seo background or more brand building, podcasting, etc.?


His response: "This person will manage case studies, a new content series I'm going to do (with video, written content, etc.), turning webinars into content - repurposing everything."


He didn't even mention a blog...


And he's not the only VP I've talked with this year that I've talked with that feels the same way.


There are two camps of marketers I talk with.


  1. Traditional marketers who rely on publishing frequency, blogging, and website traffic to prove their worth.
  2. Modern marketers who recognize the role of a content marketer has expanded way beyond creating content for the website.


The days when a static website was the central hub for your content strategy are long gone.


The future belongs to those who can distribute their content effectively across multiple platforms, and keep audiences hooked with short, impactful messages.


To stay ahead, we need to develop a new set of skills that go beyond traditional content creation.

1. Master distribution

The best content marketers know how to get their content in front of the right audience.


It's not just about creating great content—it's about making sure people see it.


Learn how to leverage multiple channels and platforms to maximize reach and engagement away from your website.


2. Write engaging newsletters

Newsletters are way more than just product updates and blog links.


They're a direct line to your audience.


So, don't blast them with things to do.


Think of your newsletter as a mini-publication that readers are excited to open every time they see it in their inbox.


3. Build strong social followings

Social media is where your audience hangs out every day.


You don't want to be the person who shows up to the party and pitches everyone on your next event, product, or service.

Whether it's a tweet, a LinkedIn post, or a YouTube video, you need to grab attention quickly and it takes a ton of practice to get there.
