Stop Talking More

Howdy ,

A few years ago, I was part of a paid mastermind.

It had a hybrid structure.

Every month, we had two sessions, a one-on-one session with main man and a group session together.

Sixty minutes with the man and ninety minutes all together with the man.

One of the things learned during my one-on-one with the main man was the power of silence.

I was used to always keeping a conversation going.

He would ask a question and just keep quiet. He would wait for how long it would take for me to come up with my answer.

The silence gave me time to think and listen again to the question.

Over explaining our point or saying more can be against the good sense of a situation.

Molly Fletcher, who CNN refers to as the female Jerry Maguire of professional athletes agents, talks about a contract negotiation which had gotten stalemated and going to arbitration.

The day before the flight to the arbitration venue, the manager on the other side called her late at night.

He was surprised that she was personally traveling with her client to the arbitration. She explained her position once again and kept quiet.

The guy on the other line didn’t respond after she spoke.

At the 60 seconds mark, her husband asked if he was still on the line. He was.

After the long silence, he said “you’ve got a deal.” He acceded to the athlete demands.

In Molly’s words, trying to over-explain can be detrimental to a negotiation.

Silence can be a better tool. Once you have made your position known.

Try silence - it may communicate better for you.

Keep creating bigger impact
