How to Stop Seeing Self Care as a Reward You Have to Earn
Jul 06, 2025 1:01 am
Hello my dear Mamas,
If I said to you, right now, "Take a load off. Go on, sit down, put your feet up and have a cuppa." I wonder if you would think, yeah, OK, thanks for that reminder, I do deserve a break. Or would your response be more along the lines of: look, that's a lovely idea but first I have to put this load of washing on, reply to that email from the school, feed the cat and empty the litter tray, tidy the playroom and do an online grocery order.
In other words, do you see self care as an essential or as a reward? A reward that is only to be taken when you've finished everything on your to do list?
Except, for most Mums, the to do list is NEVER ENDING.
Therefore, no self care for you, come back...um, never?
It's time to flip the script on what being kind and compassionate to yourself means and when you get to do it. Let's face it, would you measure the amount of kindness and grace you extend to your best Mum friend on how many things she's ticked off her to do list that day? Yeah, no, didn't think so.
So, next time you get a reminder to do something just for yourself, don't stop and analyse it or check your to do list. Just say YES PLEASE. Yes, I will sit down for ten minutes and chill the f*ck out; yes, I would love to go for a walk around the local park after school drop off; yes, I will put my favourite music on and relax while my toddler is playing happily; yes, I am going to watch an episode of my favourite TV series while baby naps...
Take the pockets of precious time that present themselves and be kind to yourself.
The clean laundry mountain ain't going anywhere anyways...
I'd love to know, what is one thing you truly enjoy doing when you have a spare moment? Hit reply now and let me know!
To you Mama!
Michelle
