This one tip 3Xd my response rate (stole it from Michael Gardiner)
Dec 18, 2025 4:55 am
Hey there,
First, I need to say thank you.
The response to these daily newsletters has been incredible. Getting messages from people saying they're implementing these tactics and seeing results? That's exactly why I do this.
Today, I want to share something that completely shifted how I write cold emails.
I booked a consulting call with Michael Gardiner last week. If you don't know him, he's one of the few people on YouTube who's actually running a lead generation agency - not just selling courses about it.
The One Shift That 3xd My Reply Rate
Michael's advice was simple but powerful:
"Write your messaging like you're already part of your prospect's team."
Stop positioning yourself as an outsider trying to sell something.
Start writing like you're an internal team member who just discovered a solution to their problem.
I tested this shift last week on 200 leads.
Old approach: 3% reply rate
Team member approach: 9% reply rate
Same list. Same offer. Different framing.

Here's What This Looks Like in Practice
❌ Outsider approach (what most people do):
"Hi [Name], I help marketing agencies improve their lead generation through cold email. Would you be open to a quick call?"
✅ Team member approach (what works):
"Hi [Name], noticed your team is posting about hiring SDRs on LinkedIn. Before you scale that, want to see how we're helping similar agencies get 15-20 qualified leads/month without adding headcount?"
See the difference?
The first one screams "I'm selling."
The second one says "I understand your situation and have relevant context."
Another example:
❌ Outsider:
"We provide deliverability consulting for cold email campaigns."
✅ Team member:
"Saw your open role for a demand gen manager. Quick question - are your cold emails actually landing in primary inbox? We just saved a client $4K/month who was burning budget on leads that never saw their emails."
You're not introducing yourself. You're joining an ongoing conversation they're already having internally.
This Even Works When You Target the "Wrong" Lead
Here's something wild that happened last week.
I sent an email to someone who wasn't even supposed to be on that list. Wrong industry. Wrong ICP. Total mistake.
But because I used the "team member" approach - speaking like I understood their world - they replied, we got on a call, and I closed the deal.
When your messaging is strong enough, even "wrong" prospects see value.
That's the power of writing like you're already on their team.
Why This Works
When you write like you're part of their team:
- You demonstrate you've done research (not spray and pray)
- You speak their language (no generic pitches)
- You position as insider who gets it, not outsider who wants something
- Your CTA feels like internal collaboration, not a sales pitch
