Use your body, rest your mind

Apr 24, 2026 2:58 pm

Let's get into it.

We use our brains too much and our bodies too little.

As a result, we're in our heads too much. (ie. mental 'health' issues)

Yes, we're homo sapiens: "smart man" / "thinking man"

But if you're reading this, you probably haven't evolved for this brain : body ratio.

One of the companies I'm working with is about to be given a challenge for May.

  1. To remember that their brain is not their only tool.
  2. To use their body.

I'd encourage you to think about this too.

Right now, have you exercised today, have you used your hands to build or create, have your eyes even looked at a distance further than 30 feet?

I'm asking because (right now), I've not yet done these myself.

But once I get through this email I'm straight out the door!

Here's the thing.

We're beautiful apes with big ol' brains BUT not enough challenges.

So we put challenges in our way.

We make problems where there shouldn't be any, cause we have nothing else to do!

We all need a hobby, something to think about and fix..

We need to be that Dad in his shed, tinkering.

Go use your hands, your feet, your sense of taste.

But we don't just need to get out our heads.

Our bodies can do so much.

Type people are awesome into Youtube and see what we can do!

Here are some tips for making a new/revisiting an old hobby to use your body

  1. Choose something that encourages your full attention (No one is thinking about their taxes when climbing or snowboarding!).
  2. Choose something where you can see improvement – learning a guitar riff, getting a faster 5k run, finally sanding down and oiling the doors in your house shows obvious changes.
  3. Choose something that makes you feel good. Maybe drumming calms you, sewing means you can re-wear your favourite old clothes, cooking means having friends for dinner
  4. Choose something that gives you new skills. We all want to feel valued, outside of work too. Become the go-to mechanic, cook, or painter for your friends/family
  5. Choose something that’s (ideally) minimal for tech – we’re in a state of perpetual overload. If your hobby allows, try to minimise the noise, the distraction, the stress.

There are all important. Here're some more ideas.

If an idea for a hobby is coming up for you: For God's sake go write it down!

Put it by your bed

Start trying it tomorrow.

If you've read this far down. Here's why this framework is VITAL.

  1. After my brain injury, i felt pretty stupid
  2. I was, arguably, quite stupid. I wasn't able to think very well.
  3. Since I was supposed to be able to think at work, this made me feel bad :(
  4. BUT - I was smashing ultra-marathons alongside work
  5. My colleagues were not. So this made me feel good :)
  6. I felt skilled, valuable and unique.
  7. I was also showing myself that I was looking after myself.
  8. I wasn't always in my mind. My body was my tool to use. I was tinkering.

I hope that helps you.

If you're feeling a little down, perhaps work isn't going too well, perhaps you're lonely.

Remember that you've always got yourself to look after πŸ’ͺ

People value you more if you value yourself.

So go get off your phone and get yourself a hobby x

Off to run now.

Ciao
