What The Ex Can Teach Us About Mortgage Risk

Hi ,

Every summer, our family has a special tradition: we spend the day at The Ex! We love watching the fun shows, eating fair snacks, and going on the midway rides.

Here are my two kids on the Swing Tower ride! This giant swing has been a popular part of the CNE since 2009. The ride lifts you 100 feet (30 metres) high into the air and spins you in large circles. If you are brave enough to open your eyes at the top, you get an amazing view of Lake Ontario and the Toronto skyline!

My days of going on high-flying rides are over because my knees get too shaky lol 😂, but the kids had a blast.

What is your favourite memory or ride at the CNE?

This experience made me think about mortgage choices. Just like a CNE ride, a variable-rate mortgage may look exciting at the beginning because it can offer a lower starting rate. But it also comes with more movement and uncertainty.

Is a Variable Mortgage Worth the Ride?

Recent bank data shows more Canadians are choosing variable-rate mortgages again. In fact, variable loans made up about 45% of new mortgages at the end of last year.nbc

A variable mortgage can feel like a thrill ride:

  • The exciting part: Starting rates are often lower, which can save you money right away .

  • The risk: If interest rates go up, your monthly payments can rise quickly .

A fixed mortgage is the steady ride. Your payments stay the same every single month, making family budgeting simple and stress-free .

What is the Best Choice for You?

If your household budget has extra room for surprises, a variable rate might work well . But if you want total peace of mind, locking into a fixed rate keeps your payments safe and predictable .

What is your preference: the steady ride of a fixed mortgage or the changing payments of a variable mortgage?

Are high-interest credit cards or loans eating into your monthly budget?

We can review your home equity and show you how rolling unsecured debts into a lower-rate mortgage could save you hundreds every month.
