[4 min read] Pre sleep data point, wearable strength tracker & 80% rule

👋 Hey. Welcome to issue #182 of The Everyday Athlete Newsletter.

Here are my 3 favourite ideas, learns and resources to help you improve your performance this week (4 min read):

🛌 New pre-sleep data point I'm tracking

Something I have been paying more attention to before bed:

My heart rate.

Bryan Johnson reckons getting his heart rate down before bed is one of the best indicators of his sleep quality.

It makes sense.

It's an indicator of parasympathetic drive and regulation.

So before lights out, I’ve been checking it. Over days and weeks of doing it, I now have a good read of my baseline that = good sleep.

If it’s 10-20% up, I know I need to hook into some down regulation breathing to drop it.

Been really helpful for me lately.

🏋️ First-of-kind wearable strength tracker

Fort are about to launch a wearable strength tracker.

Built by ex-Tesla engineers, it uses heart rate data and motion sensors to detect 50+ exercises.

Then can:

I love it.

Because if you want to get the most out of your strength training, there are some important principles to follow.

And feedback from something like this makes it easier to hit them.

For safer and more effective strength training.

Cool stuff on the horizon.

💡 The rule that sums up my entire health philosophy

Do the 20% of the things that make 80% of the difference to our health, 80% of the time.

The 20% of things are different for everyone. But they will likely focus on:

Food.

Sleep.

Train.

Move.

Breath.

Stress.

Light.

Nature.

People.

Purpose.

The foundational stuff, done most of the time, for years and years.

Might be 90% for the high achievers.

That's it!

Have a great weekend 🤙

Matt
