Today: The TRIFECTA Spiritual Pillars
After I got sober from booze, I went to sugar - hard, fast, like an addict.
Any chance I had, I would bake. Baking for me was not only satisfying my sugar cravings. When someone stops consuming alcohol, their brain seeks other sources of dopamine stimulation and sugar triggers that release quickly.
A child of the 80s, diet culture was second-nature so I spent years on the Yo-Yo planet of On Sugar / Off Sugar. There were enough successful "cleanses" out there telling me I was on the right track with this, which is how the initial Healthy Six began. But for me, while it is important for me to pause and take breaks from sugar, I am of the frame of mind that a dictatorial relationship with food doesn't work for any of us.
You can't hop on and off of healthy eating. Like exercise, it needs to be a constant in your life and the treats have to be planned in, too.
What does this have to do with Mindful Relationships, Joy and Gratitude?
Unless you are living in a commune where you grow your own veggies, cook big vats of lentil soup to share as you break the Red Fife Sourdough you have made from scratch (from the Red Fife of your sweeping fields), unless you are surrounded by athletes who are in a "cutting phase" (this is very trendy - "cutting" refers to intense fasting, high protein, no sugar/carbs/booze - the lean and mean you see on Protein Powder ads :-), unless everyone in your family is on board with nightly quinoa bowls, you are living in a world where our joy and our relationships often involve cheese boards, ice cream cones, and more.
We want to continue to be mindful of our healthy eating, exercise and sleep while allowing for the late night dinner parties with lemon curd tarts and lazy Sundays with a croissant from time to time.
Here is a tip: I want you to set up Friend Dates this summer. Sushi. Coffee shops, A long conversation over the phone. Share your own journey of health with someone you know might need to be inspired by YOU!
Today, as you head into the next two weeks, I want you to think about your goals - my goal for you is you lean into 14 days of super-healthy eating and movement and i have provided a ton of great meal prep ideas. Quick tips:
- Fill glass bowls with veggies - shred carrots, beets, cabbage. Chop peppers, celery, snap peas, cucumbers. Prepare your mixed greens by having them washed and ready to go.
- Make a soup - soup can be all season long. Have one with beans (suggestions below) for protein and fibre
- Prepare your proteins - marinade chicken and pop it into freezer bags, bake some tofu with tamari and garlic powder (super simple), make egg cups (see below)
- Have quinoa, black or brown rice in a bowl for complex carbs
