Happy Thursday Healthy Sixers -
I grew up with a mum who didn't diet.
Dieting was a way of life.
From her forays into the Cabbage Soup Diet in the 1960s, to experimenting with 16 hours fasts, The Low-Fat mania of the 80s and never eating bread, Mum's best kept secret - black coffee and cigarettes - kept her at 92 pounds dripping wet most of my young life. She couldn't help herself from small comments about my fluctuating pubescent weight, and never fully developed the internal edit button, especially when I would dust the kitchen with sugar so she could come home to freshly-baked scones after a long day. "Oh darling, you have such a sweet tooth. You will have to watch that."
It wasn't her fault. My mum was a product of the Twiggy-era, raised by a mother who not only didn't have an internal edit button, but openly commented on weight fluctuations. "You don't want to get fat, darling."
Fatness equalled: No one will ever love you.
Fat.
It's a heavy term.
Inside every Healthy Six, I continually try to remind you that the key to our health is wellness - sleeping well, eating well, moving well in our body. We haven't addressed the word "fat" and all the negative connotations attached to it. We can talk body positivity until the sun goes down, but reframing our minds around Fat / Thin. is a tough cookie to crack, all puns well-intended.
Many people start The Healthy Six because they want to be inspired and motivated to exercise, but they also do want to lose weight, they want to feel better in their clothes, and I want to help. For this reason, I create Meal Plans and Recipes that are a sustainable way of life, with healthy, and safe results.
But, I am going to ask you something today:
How many versions of you have their been in your life?
How many different sizes have you been?
How many diets have you tried?
How many times have you deprived yourself, only to have it bounce back?
How sustained was the effort?
Healthy habits should take work - but they shouldn't take exhausting effort. The systems we create should be ones that structure our lives.
It is hard to motivate yourself to be healthy all the time. Which is why we have the 80.20 Healthy Six phase, that many of you are now in. Fundamentally, we are striving for a state of wellness - physically, mentally and spiritually.
Wellness is feeling well. And for each of us, that is going to be unique.
But today, I want you to think about moments where you have felt well - not simply the last five weeks, but in your life.
I can guarantee - you feel well when you travel. You are moving, you are seeing new things, you are out in nature and you are free of stress. You feel well after a workout, when the dopamine and endorphins are hitting your brain. You feel well when you finish a task or a job and have that sense of accomplishment, triggering dopamine.
Humans are complex. Yet, we are also simple
Let's stop striving for a size or a number on a scale.
Let's strive to be well.
