Summer.
Gotta love it.
Watermelon tastes so good. So does the fresh romaine, with a little bite....arugula with a tarragon dressing (see below)....cooking up extra chicken or tofu on the grill for a nice easy lunch.
It is easy to be healthy in summer. Walk more. Swim. Meditate outside in the sun. Take time with nature.
But it is also easy to get on the Treat Train
Choo-Choo.
Today, I tacked a weed in my garden. Honestly, it was a tree. My gardener, who comes once a season to tidy up and add some extra colour told me to pull it out - when I said she could do it, she shook her head. I now know why.
This was a beast, that had its tentacles inside the ground, many layers deep. It had pulled extra turf on itself, embedded earth and was growing more roots from its roots. It was determined.
As I was digging and shaving and jumping on my shovel, and sweating I was
- Grateful I was fit enough to do that
- Hyper-aware of the analogy I was living to our habits.
Bad habits can take root in our lives, and then they never go away. I am trying to guide you to be compassion with yourself, that these things take time.
But flip the switch.
Good habits can always take hold of you - like exercising daily, treating your body to sun, water and nourishing food....not all that unlike a plant. As they say, humans are basically houseplants with complicated emotions.
Let's stay connected through the pillars this summer. In the fall, I am writing a special version of the Healthy Six that will be a journey through grief, sadness, anxiety and thing things that take hold of us....and how we can work through them by choosing to develop healthy habits.
This is my purpose.
Thanks for being part of it.
Reminder for July
- Our focus this week is SMOOTHIES! Embrace the creativity of smoothies and getting your fibre and protein in one place! Use kefir, coconut water, almond milk and plain water for your base (if you whip up frozen blueberries with a TBSP almond butter, spinach, vanilla or chocolate protein powder, and 1 tbsp hemp seeds, plus a tsp of cinnamon, you can just add water and will be lovely and full of flavor!
- We will have Meal Prep, once a month, but you are welcome to meal prep weekly and you can always invite another Healthy Sixer to join you! I would love this to be a community where you learn to lean on each other, too!
- This month - we will move Meal Prep from July 7 (on the calendar) to July 14th (my kids have lots of sport this summer!
- I have been chatting with the ladies from GOOD FOOD GOOD MOOD and we WILL have a session. They are busy girls!
- I also have Amanda Nicholson, Holistic Nutritionist, lined up for July to talk to us about balancing blood sugar. We are aiming for Thursday, July 11th!
- I am putting together a "Healthy Six sample week" thread on Workouts. This will have several STRONG programs, a Tabata, Bands and Yoga. These are just suggestions! Focus on strength, cardio, core and mobility!
