When I was growing up, the closest Dairy Queen was a 75 minute bike ride away. In the hot summer months, my friends and I would saddle up - no helmets, of course - and bike out of Main Street from Hudson along the River Road to Rigaud, hitting major intersections, passing 18-wheelers, dangerously meandering through busy traffic to get the Hot Fudge Banana Split.
Blizzards launched in 10th grade. Life was forever changed.
Skor pieces could be BLENDED with softie ice cream?
Shut. Up.
By the time we got to Dairy Queen we had expended the calories consumed, and then burned more on the way back. While this is by no means on par with foraging for food, the accessibility factor of treats was a lot less then than it is now. Treats are now everywhere, and embedded into all we do.
We are heading into Treat Season. Which is why I always do a Healthy Six in Spring, to make us more conscious.
But how to you bulletproof yourself and stay on your path:
- 80/20 life with an actual plan: You know when you are going to be out with friends / out for ice cream with the kids. Plan for it and enjoy it. The rest of the time, drink your sparkling water, nibble on almonds and blueberries, have plenty of fresh fruit popsicles in the freezer (recipe below), and stay the course. Protein, fibre, fat.
- When you have a 1-3 day treat bender (and you might) grant yourself forgiveness, and get back to life quickly.
- If you find yourself craving something - stop and think. What are you feeling/ Are you really craving chocolate or are you filling an empty void?
You will have support all summer long. I got you.
