Whatever happened to autumn?

Between the Pages

Hi

We have made the jump from Summer straight into winter, and it’s been a shock to the system. I have found myself eating far more than usual.

I rarely eat bread at home. When I investigated the freezer, I found the remains of a loaf that I put in there nearly 12 months ago. With a burst of enthusiasm, which also gave me a break from writing, I decided to make a loaf.

Usually, I make a loaf using predominantly whole grain flour, combined with some white flour. I looked in the flour bins, and the whole grain mode morphed into a solid, mouldy lump. It stank as well. That meant I had to use the white flour only. On a whim, I added a cup of grated cheese, and some chopped up chives.

Here is the result. I had a slice when warm from the oven, and after slicing the loaf, put it in the freezer. I can pull out slices when I have one of those wintery soups.

Those of you who have read any of the books from the Red Centre Series will be aware from the notes that I used to live in Alice Springs, and my experiences during that time, particularly when I learned to fly, informed much of the stories. I’m heading back to Alice, but it will be a very short trip.

I am contemplating purchasing a campervan, and to get first-hand experience of travelling in one, have signed up for a van relocation between Adelaide and Alice. It costs $1 per day, plus booking fee, plus fuel.

My sister is accompanying me. We are allocated four days in which to complete the journey, and will probably spend time in Coober Pedy on the way. This is an opal-mining town, where many of the structures are built underground because of the heat.

Watch this space for a report on how we find it. The van below is indicative of the one we'll be driving.

Yes, it’s my birthday today. It tends to be a low-key event these days (it’s not one of the zero birthdays) so I can share it with you instead.

Using this link, you can download an ebook copy of Skywalkers, a story of mystery and intrigue set in the Adelaide CBD. This offer expires on 30 June 2025.

Fallen Angel

image

As per usual, writing has kept me busy. I have just completed Fallen Angel, which is the prequel to Avenging Angel, and is female-led noir. It is written by alter ego, Rowena Wylde.

I hadn’t thought of writing an Angel series, but received such an enthusiastic response to Avenging Angel, that I was persuaded to consider it. Fallen Angel tells of Zahra’s story before she became an assassin.

I will be uploading it to the various retail platforms later shortly so you are receiving advance notice. It is not officially launched, but if you would like an ARC copy, with a view to leaving a review, reply to rowenawylde@gmail.com.

She trusted the wrong people. She survived the unthinkable. Now she’s ready to fight back.

When Zahra arrives in Sydney with nothing but a backpack and a flicker of hope, she never expects to be sold into the sex trade by someone she thought was a friend. Trapped in a brutal underworld, her spirit is shattered—but not broken.

Years later, Zahra is free—but freedom has its own price. Haunted by the death of a friend and failed by a justice system that sees some lives as disposable, she begins to take justice into her own hands.

Fallen Angel is the gripping origin story of Zahra, the woman who will become an avenging force for those who cannot fight back.
