Hello
Happy Halloween week! Below are links to my three favorite Halloween "Mental Toughness in 60 Seconds" videos. Each one gives you a unique way to overcome different obstacles. Let's start with the most Halloween-ish obstacle of all, FEAR!
Obstacle: FEAR!!!
Fear may be the most common barrier to peak performance in sport (and life). Fear of failure. Fear of success! Fear of making a mistake or letting down teammates, coaches, and parents. Fear of the opinions of others and our reputation if we aren't perfect. It paralyzes us.
How to Overcome:
Believe it or not, It isn't the presence of fear that is the problem. It is how you interact with it. More in the video below:
Obstacle: Not improving despite your best efforts
Athletes often put in a ton of time and energy into practice, equipment, and coaching but still don't get the results they expect. It can be frustrating and exhausting.
How to Overcome:
Maybe you should be training smarter rather than harder? Apply the latest science to your recovery and training to be more efficent and maximize your efforts. This includes the psychological sciences, coaching and exercise science, the science of recovery (sleep), and technology that can provide accurate data to help you along your journey.
More in the video below, with guest speaker Tony Stark (A.K.A. Ironman of the Avengers):
Obstacle: Self-sabatoge with a lack of commitment and follow-through
This is more common than you might think. And there are many reasons we get in our own way. Maybe a fear of success, and the expectations that follow if if win. Then we have to keep winning!
Maybe we want to succeed, but the time and effort are too much. We aren't willing to sacrifice and do what it takes.
Perhaps we lack confidence and simply don't believe that we can win. We may be stuck believing the lies a negative coach, a critical parent, or bully teammates once told us. So we don't follow through and do everything that is required to succeed.
How to Overcome:
Ultimately you have to decide if you are in or out. When it comes to success, there is no room for half-hearted commitment. Johnny Lawrence of Cobra Kai (or of The Karate Kid if you grew up in the 80's!) said it best: "Strike First. Strike Hard. No Mercy." Translated into sport psychology it means, "Initiate. Give maximum effort. Develop a killer instinct." "Johnny" breaks down these three critical behaviors to maximize your success in the video below.
Enjoy the season,
