If you're like a good swatch of my friends, you've been anxiously awaiting Jim Butcher's latest Dresden book, Battle Ground, which came out last week. I promise absolutely no spoilers in this email, even if you haven't gotten around to the reading the previous book, Peace Talks. But yes, they are both excellent additions to the Chicago wizard's lore.
Love me some Dresden Files!
I have thoroughly enjoyed watching Harry Dresden grow in this series from a magical gumshoe into something so much more in his battles with the supernatural. (Sue the T. Rex, anyone?) But for me, the series really shines not just because Dresden experiences (often painful) growth, but so do many of the side characters. Book 3, Grave Peril, proved that commitment when a love interest's circumstances went horribly sideways. And since then, I have cheered and cried for so many supporting cast, like Murphy the cop, Butters the medical examiner, and even Bob the talking skull. At the end of most books, I'm just as anxious (sometimes more so) to learn about the fates of these poor souls caught in the crosshairs of Dresden's adventures as I am for Dresden himself.
And perhaps I love these side characters because of how they mimic real life. Dresden had to learn the hard way that no matter how hard you try, you cannot control the ones you love. Loving our friends is less about protecting them than accepting them for who they are, and sometimes that hurts. As I grow older, that is something I can truly relate to.
