The Friday Four--(New Template!)

Oct 16, 2020 12:36 am

Hi friend!

This week, I'm experimenting with a new Email Campaign service.

Structure is great. So is change. Based on my experience crafting this email, as well as a 5-second survey from you guys, I'll determine if I'm ready to make the swap! Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me.

This is a forever-free email I'll send at 7 am every Friday.

Each week, I'll send you something cool you can watch, read, use, and listen to.

If you dig it, or if you have any suggestions, reach out to me and let me know. I’d love to hear your thoughts.

If you hate it, cancel anytime. If you hate me, cancel me anytime...

Something for you to...

1) watch.

🙂 Television is a Confusing, Expensive Mess

image

Drew Gooden is my new favorite YouTuber. His witty commentary over the absurd, sketches, and John Mulaney-like candor makes his 20 minute videos go by in 2.

This lovely dive into cable TV was a hilarious reminder for me that people still watch cable TV.

The question is: Why do people still pay $100 a month to watch censored, low-grade television with ads, when paying for all the top ad-free streaming services would still only cost around $40 a month?

Spoiler alert: Sports. The answer is sports.

😕 How the Modern World Makes Us Mentally Ill - Dr. Jonathan Haidt

image

Social psychologist, author, and NYU Ethics professor, Jonathan Haidt, is one of the most sensible and articulate minds on the dangers of technology and social media.

Having a 14-year old sister, it troubles me to learn that young girls are being exponentially affected by the comparative and judgmental aspects of our most popular companies and apps.

Research from Jonathan's eye-opening book, The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas Are Setting Up a Generation for Failure (coauthored with Greg Lukianoff), was included in the popular documentary The Social Dilemma--which I have mentioned in this newsletter as well as on my blog.

If you haven't seen The Social Dilemma yet, I highly encourage you to watch this gripping and informative video.

Jennifer Dewalt--180 websites in 180 days

Yes. She really did that. With zero coding experience.

As someone who just began his coding journey, I find this incredibly inspiring.

Whether it's coding, writing, archery, whatever...just start.

You'll have two possible thoughts a year from now:

1) "I can't believe I've been doing this for a year already!"

OR

2) "I've been thinking about doing this for a year..."

A year from now, you'll be glad you started today.

3) use.

The 'Getting Things Done' Framework

image

This system has--in the span of 6 days--completely changed my life.

That's not a dramatic exaggeration. I have become 50% more efficient in terms of how much I'm accomplishing.

But Getting Things Done (GTD) is not about getting more things done so to speak. It's about having stress-free and positive relationships with the things you want and need to check off your To-do list.

Without summarizing the entire system, the key idea is to accurately capture everything coming In: Projects, obligations, tasks, chores, ideas, calls, events, plans, research...Literally everything that will cause you some sort of thought or stress.

We often rely on our memories to keep track of the hundreds of bite-sized tasks we must get done. But our memories are garbage. We need a system. Then, we need to regularly review that system.

This all sounds incredibly boring on paper, I'm sure. Please, if you have any questions, or if you would like to greatly improve your productivity or organizational habits, schedule a (totally free) session with me!

Damn. This is cool.

Favorite vlog:

This restaurant saved my life

A movie of gratitude for the place that helped me lay the ground work for getting my life in order.

Also. Friends. It is with a heavy heart that I announce (to my 20 regular viewers) that I will be quitting the vlog. I didn't make it to my goal of a video a day until 2021. But I did accomplish my goal of improving at something I thought was really cool.

More on this in detail from me later. But thank you to anyone who has watched my videos thus far. I am not quitting YouTube, just the daily vlog.

“Why don’t we honor our values all the time? A common theme is that our fear is stronger than our desire for fulfillment. That fear, which leads to self-sabotage, comes in a variety of guises.”

-Henry Kimsey-House

“People don’t buy things because they’re cheap. They buy them because they’re valuable.”

And don't forget to tell me what you think of this look and feel friend! I'd really appreciate it.
