The Friday Four--Trauma, Plants, and Hogwarts!

Nov 06, 2020 6:01 pm

Hi friend!

Here's your forever-free email I send at 7 am every Friday.

Each week, I send you something cool you can watch, read, use, and listen to.

If you dig it, or if you have any suggestions, reach out to me and let me know. I’d love to hear your thoughts.

If you hate it, cancel anytime. If you hate me, cancel me anytime...

Here's something for you to...

1) watch.

How childhood trauma affects health across a lifetime | Nadine Burke Harris

image

A fascinating TED talk recommended to me by my friend who is a youth therapist.

"Childhood trauma isn’t something you just get over as you grow up. Pediatrician Nadine Burke Harris explains that the repeated stress of abuse, neglect, and parents struggling with mental health or substance abuse issues has real, tangible effects on the development of the brain. This unfolds across a lifetime, to the point where those who’ve experienced high levels of trauma are at triple the risk for heart disease and lung cancer. An impassioned plea for pediatric medicine to confront the prevention and treatment of trauma, head-on."

2) read.

Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport

image

I've mentioned this book before, but after finishing it, it's confirmed that this will be one I gift to everyone I care about.

Here's my GoodReads review.

TL;DR:

Being a digital minimalist does not mean deleting all your social media accounts or replacing your smart phone with a flip phone. It means cutting your use of tech down to the absolute minimum necessary to uphold your values. Using an app should bring you more value than it does costs.

I HIGHLY recommend anyone read this book along with watching The Social Dilemma.

3) use.

• Salt Lamps

I'm late to the game on these. They put me at peace, which makes me more productive, feel more present, and just enjoy my atmosphere more.

They also pair beautifully with...

• Plants!

I've been pestering my crazy-plant-lady friends for tips and tricks. Everyone should have plants in their life. They'll turn your office into a sacred and wonderful place.

Me being a plant-white belt, my friend sent me this diagram and I've found it incredibly helpful in getting started.

4) listen to.

Harry Potter Ambient Music (YouTube video)

I'm listening to this calming and inspiring mix right now, as I piece this newsletter together.

It's emotional, uplifting, and perfect for getting work done.

Happy Potter fans will feel nostalgic. Harry Potter deniers will enjoy it nonetheless.
