If you're getting ready to take the Duolingo English Test, make sure you set things up properly.

1. Choose a quiet, private room

1. Choose a quiet, private room

You can take the DET from home, which is great! Just make sure the room is:

• quiet
• bright
• private
• one where you're completely alone

No people walking in, no distractions. All you need with you is a computer, your smartphone, and your ID.

2. Get your computer ready

Before the test, make sure you have:

• a computer (laptop or desktop)
• webcam, microphone, keyboard, and speakers (no headphones)
• a decent internet connection

Close all other apps before you start.

3. Get your phone ready

Your phone is now part of the setup. You'll use it to:

• scan your room
• scan your ears
• record your screen and keyboard during the test

Make sure it's fully charged, on Do Not Disturb, and ideally plugged in so you don't run out of battery mid-test.

4. Keep your desk clear

Keep things simple.

Your desk should only have what you need for the test — your computer and keyboard. Remove notes, books, headphones, tablets, and anything else.

5. Don't move your phone once the test starts

Once your phone is set up as a second camera, don't move it. It needs to stay in place and record for the whole test.
