We're back from a week-long road trip to Texas. It was a whirlwind trip to see our youngest son for his birthday and several of my husband's former students and colleagues. The pup came along too which, let me tell you, is a challenge in logistics. Our favorite place to stay in Austin was off-limits this time (not dog-friendly) as was the idea of eating out (couldn't leave him in his crate at the hotel) so he literally was with us 24/7. Luckily, the weather was nice if a bit hot for me (90s) so there were a lot of meals ordered for carry-out and eaten in parks and poolside at our hotel. Our usual Texas fare was on the menu: lots of barbecue, tacos, and brisket, and a daily search of local coffee shops for my morning fuel.
The trip was also timed to coincide with the bluebonnets blooming. I've always wanted to see them after coming across 'See Texas' ads in magazines showing glorious acres of flowers against a golden Texas sunset. Seven days into the trip and a few out-of-the way excursions: no bluebonnets! Oh, there were little patches in the interstate medians and in the ditches, but they were a far cry from magazine photos. But the day we left Austin, we decided to get off I-35 north of town and take the back roads for most of the afternoon. That's when we spotted SO. MANY. FIELDS. OF. BLUEBONNETS! The clouds dulled the colors a bit but there they were! Little patches of Indian paintbrush and pale pink flowers (any Texans want to chime in with what these might be?) which looked like mini poppies were interspersed among the bluebonnets too.
In book news, the PROMISE ME OCTOBER novella is wrapping up. Then it's off to the editor. I'll be formatting the Blueberry Point collection and the corresponding recipes next month. I hope to have a pre-order link ready by the end of the month.

WHAT I'M READING: One reason I love taking long road trips is because I can read for long, leisurely stretches without feeling like I need to be doing something else. I started Melanie Jacobsen's Kiss the Girl, a charming rom-com, last week. The book opens with a super funny wedding scene which was both hilarious and inspiring since I'm working on a wedding scene for PROMISE ME OCTOBER at the moment. See my book rec below for more of Kiss the Girl.
Happy Reading!
