Sometimes I get so wrapped up (pun intended) in making everything holiday perfect I forget to slow down and enjoy the season.
Not this year.
Since my knee surgery, I've found myself sitting⏤a lot. Leg propped on the coffee table, ice wrap Velcro-ed to my leg, I turn the machine on and the gentle whirr-ing starts. Ice cold water pulses through tubes embedded in the wrap, which isn't ideal when the temperature outside is in the teens. I bundle up in my flannel pjs and fleece throw and sip a cup of peppermint tea while the time passes. It's a little Zen-ish, the machine's hum, the layers cocooning me, the Christmas tree lit across the room. I kind of don't mind the doctor telling me to take it easy during the busiest time of year. It's a good time to reflect on my blessings. It's such a treat to read throughout the day other than only at bedtime. It's a good time to be still.

Tomorrow we head north for a few days for a little family time before the Christmas celebration with extended family. Our daughter's birthday is on the first day of winter, so she's picked a restaurant for dinner and a pie for her celebration dessert. We're staying at a ski resort but there is no snow for sledding and skiing. Unless we get a change in the forecast soon, we're going with our list of Plan B activities⏤hiking, trampoline park, shopping. I'm looking forward to it even though I'll be a bystander.
