December 12, 2023
The cookies cutters came out this weekend as did the sprinkles, edible glitter, and some googly eyes left over from Halloween. Visions of Martha Stewart-worthy decorated cutouts danced in my idealistic head until Grand Girl #2 emptied the entire bottle of red and green beads onto one cookie. The adventure continued from there. When the flour settled and the dog finished licking up whatever else landed on the floor, we had twelve large, very tasty cookies, frosted and dressed in their very Merry Christmas best. I doubt Martha every included a charming cyclops Christmas tree (see photo for the one-eyed fir tree) in her repertoire of holiday sugar cookies. At least not that she'd admit to.
Baking cookies with the grand girls was a fun kickoff to cookie baking season for me. This week I've pulled my favorite recipes from my grandmother's oak recipe box and shopped for the ingredients to make three-layer bars, Oreo snowballs, gingersnaps, thumbprint cookies and pecan crescents. Some will go with me to the library board meeting, some to a family party next weekend, and the rest will end up in the freezer to pull out for Christmas Day. But there will be plenty of sampling in between⏤YUM!

They're both hired to deck the halls at the newly opened Blueberry Point Lodge for the holidays. After sharing an awkward mistletoe kiss a year earlier, Layla Dean receives a misdirected text invitation to a holiday event from Brant whom she's tried to avoid ever since that one fateful night.

I have two festive recommendations below. Hopefully I'll have more time to read after this week when I finish wrapping presents. My knee is healing nicely so I've been up and about, and I'm only reading the ten minutes before I turn off the lights at night. I started The Seaside Library by Brenda Novak last week. After I'm finished, I'll add that title to the Clean My Shelves Giveaway for January. Next up is The One for Me by Rachel Hanna.
What are you reading this week?
