Book Research Down on the (Apple) Farm * Sweet Recs

October 4, 2023

Nothing says "fall" better than a visit to an apple farm, don't you think?

They've been ripening in our neck of the woods since Labor Day, so the harvest was in full swing this weekend when I visited Ski-Hi Orchard in Baraboo, WI on Monday. This particular place brings back a lot of fun memories from childhood when we'd visit my great-grandmother and head to the orchard for apple turnovers and fresh cider. On Monday, I went for some of the same but also came away with a bag of Galas, apple salsa, and fresh honey. New to me was the small petting area to visit the farm's furred and feathered hosts. My hand may have gotten into the middle of a little melee between a donkey and turkey. No harm done!

This orchard inspired Apple Hill Orchard in That Woman on Thistledown Lane which is run by Janie's older sister, Rose and her husband Jordan. You'll be able to visit it even more when Book #2 comes out in early 2024.

I'm officially turning in That Woman on Thistledown Lane by the end of the week! I can't wait for you to visit Port Chance and spend time with Janie Wendell and Mark Christie while they navigate their second chance at love. Here's another little snippet from a scene:

Janie shook her head at Becki when she said she'd finish taking Mark's tux measurements in another minute. “I don’t want you to rush what you’re doing. I’ve got an errand to run.” Janie thumbed over her shoulder, backing toward the threshold.

Becky pointed with the tape measure. “Watch your st—”

Too late. Janie’s heel caught the raised portion of the threshold and she stumbled backward, bumping the chair that propped the shop's door open and upending the geranium pot sitting on it. The pot shattered on the pavement next to her with a dull thud.

Mark was beside her in an instant.

“Are you all right?” he and Becky asked simultaneously.

“I’m fine, thank you,” she said as she foolishly scooped handfuls of soil over the visible bare roots of the plant. Luckily, her bottom took the brunt of the fall. The only thing bruised was her ego.

“Don’t worry about the plant,” said Becky. “I have another pot in the storeroom.” She disappeared into the shop and returned with a garbage can and a broom.

“It’s dangerous trying to avoid me all the time” Mark said, holding her arm with one hand and circling her back with the other. “Maybe you should change tactics.”

“I don't know what you're talking about,” she said curtly as her entire body hummed with the effect of his touch. Janie straightened herself, tugging at the straps of her sundress which had gone slightly askew. She was as graceful as a water buffalo in his presence. Why did he happen to be everywhere she was in Port Chance?

A woman too good to be true, an FBI agent with an angry informant on the loose, and the small town full of hope that brings them together.

"Danae Little has a unique ability to portray characters with grace and mercy. One of my favorite things about the Hope Lake series is how all the storylines have included both men and women who are doing the best they can with what they have." - Amazon review
