The Power Of Focus

'A sack of garri weighs...'

Before Sir K would finish his statement, my classmates and I would start to giggle silently.

Mr. Kayode (aka Sir K), my physics teacher in secondary school, was a very funny man. He had a distinct yoruba accent that made him even funnier.

One of the things Sir K taught us was how to burn a piece of paper with light rays from the sun by using a small convex lens to direct the light rays to the paper. This small experiment taught me a game-changing life lesson - the power of focus

, your creativity can yield unprecedented results when you introduce the element of focus.

One of the reasons we start to talk about having a project that you want to accomplish within the 6 months of your Genius X membership is to help you focus your creativity energy.

Without focus, one could be sitting on a goldmine whilst dying of hunger.

Let me spill the tea on how to become focused in 4 simple steps.

Decide first what the object of your focus ought to be.

What is important to you NOW?

You don't want to allocate the majority of your resources to a minor project, a project that can be delegated or a future project. If you're spending 5 hours listening to a podcast on how to become a CEO, when what is most important to you now is to be an excellent employee, you're burning the wrong paper.

Now that you've determined what you want to focus on, allocate a good portion of your resources to it

Allocate time blocks to them. Be very specific (e.g, from 5 pm - 9pm everyday, I'll work on this). When you slip into that routine, your body and mind become accustomed to it, making it easier for you to stick with it.

It's not just time. it's also your energy - make sure you conserve your energy/choose a time when you're naturally high in energy to focus on the tasks.

Schedule your 'distractions'

Give yourself breaks. Observe how long you can work at a stretch with high concentration. After every stretch, rest and relax for a bit and then get back to work!

Finally, train yourself to focus

Every time you feel like you're drifting while working, instead of indulging yourself, get back to concentrate on your task. Your mind muscle needs training. If you train it properly, it will carry the weight of your vision successfully.

Be focused! You can be spontaneous with your methods, but you can't be spontaneous with your mission.

So, if you've not still written out your project, make sure you do so, and use these 4 steps above to draw up an implementation strategy.

I'm committed to your unfolding greatness.
