You might have heard the story of the wealthy man who called three of his domestic staff and gave them thousands of dollars to invest. He told them he would be away for a long while and he expected them to do business in his absence.
He went on his trip just like he said and the three servants had a lot of time to themselves. No supervision. No schedule. No senior staff monitoring their moves.
The first servant was smart. He went off into the market and did a lot of business. He stood the chance of losing, but he persevered. Soon enough, against all odds, he turned the $10,000 he had received from his boss into $20,000. He doubled his money.
The second servant did something similar. he only had $4,000, but he wasn't discouraged that he had less. He poured his heart into his business and sure enough, in spite of all the ups and downs of the economy, he doubled his money. He had $8,000.
The third servant did not follow their footsteps. He had $1000 and instead of trading, investing or even saving it in a high-yield account, he simply locked it up in an old tin under his bed.
He spent all the time lazying around. No drive. No objective. No goals. Essentially, he wasted his boss' investment as well as his own time and gift.
He had no idea that it would backfire in a terrible manner.
When the wealthy man returned. He called them together to see what they had done with the monies he gave them before he travelled.
He was impressed by the entrepreneurial drive and sense of responsibility of the first two servants. He spoke highly of them and rewarded them with large and beautiful estates. You can imagine their shock. Who in the world rewards domestic staff with estates.
You can already imagine how sad and embarrassed the third staff was. The wealthy man told him off. He called him "lazy and wicked". Such a slothful soul.
He couldn't even put the money in an account where it would yield some interest. Truly sad. The master collected his $1,000 and gave it to the first staff.
