The Power of Patience: A Cyclist's Journey to Peak Performance

Sep 25, 2024 7:31 am

My client's question really got me thinking yesterday during a Cycle Lean Project consultation. Here's the thing he asked:

"My current FTP is 240 watts, which puts me at 3 watts per kilogram. My goal is to increase that to 4 watts per kilogram, which would mean an FTP of 290 watts at 73 kilograms. Do you think that's achievable in the next 11 weeks, or should I extend the timeline? Right now, I'm riding about 12 hours a week. Would you recommend increasing that to 20 hours?"

Whew! Talk about ambition, right? But here's the thing – is the fastest route always the best one?

In cycling, as in life, we often get caught up in the rush to reach our goals. We want results, and we want them yesterday. But let me share with you the advice I gave my client because it might just change the way you approach your own cycling goals.

So I suggested he pump the brakes a bit. After all, sustainable progress is always going to be better than trying for a quick fix, don't you think?

Instead of trying to drop 5kgs and boost his FTP by 50 watts in just 11 weeks, I recommended focusing on weight loss first, then ramping up the power later.

I can imagine you're wondering, "But won't taking it slow mean slower progress?"

It's a fair point, but let me explain why I think the trade-off is worth it.

By taking the time to lose weight and build better habits, you're more likely to maintain that progress long-term. It's not about the sprint; it's about winning the Tour de France of your personal fitness journey.

Those crash diets?

They're like trying to win a race on a flat tire – you might make some initial progress, but you're setting yourself up for a DNF in the long run.

Think about it. When you're on a super restrictive diet, how's your energy on the bike? How's your recovery? Your mood? Chances are, they're all taking a hit.

And that affects your performance both on and off the bike. You're not just training your body; you're training your lifestyle.

Now, I know what you're thinking. "This all sounds great, but how do I actually do it?" Well, that's where the Cycle Lean Project comes in.

We're all about helping cyclists like you achieve sustainable, long-term improvements in both weight and power.

No quick fixes, no miracle diets – just solid, science-backed strategies that work with your body, not against it.
