A Tale of Two Cyclists

Yesterday morning, Jamie and I were set to take a few laps around Regents Park, a treat to start the week with.

The sun was finally out, casting a warm 11-degree glow at 7:30 am.


A welcome reprieve from the usual leggings and overshoes attire we were accustomed to.


Typically, I'm an early bird, preferring to hit the park promptly at 5:30 am. However, with the recent spike in bike jacking, I opted for a later time when there's a bigger crowd. A safety precaution, if you will.


As I made my way, the morning commute was in full swing. Fellow cyclists trickled in, heading to work, slowing my journey slightly. The occasional stop at traffic lights and the need to be mindful of my surroundings added a bit of an edge.


Among the sea of cyclists, one caught my eye. A fellow with a sleek bike, outfitted with two pannier bags, and a Rapha jersey. A clear indication he was more than your average commuter.


As I joined him, it was evident he was in a rush. Darting between cars, overtaking lorries, in a futile bid to get ahead of us other cyclists. I, however, took a more relaxed approach, focusing on safety, and weaving through the traffic when it was safe.


And with every stop and start, I found myself catching up with him. His desperate attempts to speed past the traffic were in vain. At every set of traffic lights, we were neck and neck. Once we set off again, I'd effortlessly breeze past him.


This Tuesday morning encounter made me reflect on the parallels between this scenario and cyclists trying to lose weight. Many are constantly seeking shortcuts, quick fixes that may offer short-term gains. But in the long run, someone taking a sensible approach to dieting, consistent in their efforts, will not only achieve similar results but potentially even surpass them.


It's the classic Tortoise and Hare scenario.
