When my mum’s cat taught me a lesson about hitting your goals

Ever had one of those weekends where something small (and slightly ridiculous) sparks a bigger thought?
That was me this weekend while visiting family down in Plymouth.
I was in the kitchen making breakfast when my mum’s cat decided it was the perfect time to use the litter tray.
All fine… until he completely missed it.
His aim was way off.
Now, most cats are private creatures, but to his credit, he quickly realised he’d missed his mark, adjusted his position, and got it right the second time.
And that’s where my brain started ticking.
Because how often do we do the same thing with our goals?
Whether it’s losing weight, getting stronger, or improving your cycling, we think we’re aiming in the right direction — but sometimes, our target isn’t clear at all.
We might be putting in the effort, training hard, eating “better”, but without knowing exactly what we’re aiming for, it’s easy to miss the mark.
And just like my mum’s cat, the answer isn’t to give up or get frustrated — it’s to readjust your aim.
Maybe your training intensity is too high to recover properly.
Maybe your nutrition isn’t supporting your riding.
Maybe your goals are too vague — “I want to get fitter” instead of “I want to ride 20 watts stronger by December.”
You can only hit the target when you know what you’re aiming for.
So, if you’ve been training or dieting but still feel like you’re missing the mark, it might be time to step back, reassess, and fine-tune your approach.
That’s exactly what I help riders do inside my Cycle Lean 1-2-1 Coaching Programme.
We strip away the guesswork, set clear, achievable targets, and give you the support to actually hit them — consistently.
