Can a holiday actually boost your cycling fitness? Here's what I discovered...

Have you ever worried that taking a break from training would ruin all the hard work you've put in?

I used to feel the same way. But a recent trip to France completely changed my perspective. Let me tell you what happened...

This week, my partner and I headed to France for a short summer getaway. We were visiting their family at their holiday home - a chance to relax, indulge in some amazing food, and unplug from the usual grind of work and training.

Now, I'll admit - part of me was anxious about stepping away from my carefully crafted training plan.

Would I lose fitness?

Come back feeling sluggish and unmotivated?

But you know what? Something surprising happened instead.

As we settled into the laid-back rhythm of French country life, I found myself easily maintaining some key healthy habits:

• Getting plenty of restful sleep (no alarm clocks!)

• Staying hydrated and skipping the booze

• Savouring delicious meals without overindulging

• Taking leisurely walks to explore the countryside

I wasn't following any strict regimen. Just listening to my body and enjoying the change of pace.

And when I returned home? I felt...amazing. Refreshed. Energized. Ready to hop back on the bike with renewed enthusiasm.

So what's the lesson here?

You don't need to fear losing fitness on holiday. If you maintain mindful habits, a short break can actually leave you feeling better and more motivated than before.

It's not about depriving yourself or sticking to a rigid training schedule while you're away. It's about finding that sweet spot of relaxation and moderation that allows your body and mind to recharge.

When was the last time you really let yourself rest and recover? Or stepped back to think about your cycling goals?

Sometimes, that mental reset is exactly what we need to come back stronger than ever.

Now, I know what you might be thinking. "That's great for you, but I've already had my holiday and now I'm feeling a bit off track."
