Taking the First Step: My Journey to Better Health (And How You Can Too!)

I've been putting off dealing with a couple of nagging health issues for way too long. I'm sure you can relate - we've all been there, right?

For the past year, I've been struggling with two frustrating problems. The first was a reaction to some hair dye shampoo that left my face with eczema.

The second? An ongoing issue with my nose that's been bothering me since I broke it playing sports way back in 2007.

I know what you might be thinking - why didn't I just take care of these issues right away? Honestly, I've been asking myself the same question. But sometimes, it's easier said than done.

My breathing had gotten worse over time, to the point where I was sleeping with my mouth open (not a great look, I know). And the eczema?

Well, let's just say it wasn't doing wonders for my self-esteem.

I'd made some progress with the NHS, finding a good eczema cream from France and getting an operation scheduled for January.

But here's where things got interesting: I recently started working as a consultant at Bupa, which gave me access to private medical cover.

My partner (bless her) had been gently nudging me to use this opportunity to see a GP about both issues. But you know how it is – there's always an excuse, always a reason to put it off.

Plus, I had a cycling trip to Mallorca planned for April, and I didn't want any procedures to interfere with that.

Sound familiar? We've all been there, putting off things we know we should do.

But last week, I finally bit the bullet. I booked two GP appointments, and within 24 hours, I had a meeting with an ENT surgeon to discuss the operation. The process of seeing a dermatologist is also in the works.

You know what? The moment I got home, I felt a wave of positivity wash over me. Just by taking action, by making that first move, I felt like I was making progress. Suddenly, these issues that had been weighing me down didn't seem so insurmountable anymore.

But here's the lesson I've learned - taking action to improve your health doesn't have to be complicated. It can be as simple as booking that appointment, signing up for that class, or committing to a new positive habit.

The first step is often the hardest, but it can make all the difference.

It's not just about health, either. This principle applies to all areas of our lives. Maybe you've been putting off starting a new fitness routine, or perhaps you've been thinking about taking up cycling but haven't quite gotten around to it.

Whatever it is, I want to encourage you to take that first step today. Book that appointment. Sign up for that class. Enter that cycling event you've been eyeing.
