The Sleep Question That Changed Everything

Nov 10, 2025 8:31 am

"What's the best supplement to take to improve my sleep?"

Last week, I had a conversation in the clinic that stuck with me. A customer walked in with a straightforward question and asked me the above.

Sounds simple enough, right?

But he had already been down that road.

Magnesium. Herbal teas. Sleep aids. You name it, he'd tried it. And yet, night after night, he was still staring at the ceiling, wondering what he was missing.

So I asked him a different question: "What does your evening actually look like?"

As we continued talking, I realised that his real issue wasn't finding the right supplement. He was looking for a quick fix, a shortcut to better sleep.

He told me about his routine, or rather, his lack of one.

Late dinners. Screen time right up until bed. A glass of wine to "take the edge off."

He was checking his Apple Watch every single morning to see his sleep score.

Obsessing over it. Letting that number dictate how he felt.

I realised in that moment that he wasn't looking for a supplement.

He was looking for external validation, a way to feel in control of something he couldn't fully command.

And I get it. We all are. We live in a world that's constantly selling us the next best thing, the magic pill, the revolutionary product, the technology that's going to solve everything.

But that's not how our bodies work.

Here's what I told him: supplements aren't the solution. They're the cherry on top. The real foundation? It's built on the basics.

Think about it. A consistent sleep routine. Putting your phone down an hour before bed. Skipping the alcohol in the evening. Caffeine cut off at least 12 hours before sleep.

A room so dark you can't see your hand in front of your face. No clocks staring back at you.

No screens glowing in the darkness.

And learning to trust what your body is telling you, instead of relying solely on what your watch is saying.

We've become so dependent on technology to validate our experience that we've forgotten how to listen to ourselves.

How to notice that you actually slept well because you feel rested, not because some algorithm gave you a score of 87.

How to recognise that your body knows what it needs when you give it the space to tell you.

Achieving good sleep doesn't have to be complicated. It's not about constantly searching for the perfect supplement or the latest wellness fad.

It's about reconnecting with your body. Building routines that stick. Giving yourself permission to rest without needing external validation.

And this principle applies to everything. Weight loss. Strength. Energy. Confidence.

They all start with the fundamentals.

If you've been chasing the next best thing, trying supplement after supplement, gadget after gadget, and wondering why nothing's working, I want to invite you to try something different.

Let's focus on what actually matters. My 1:1 coaching is designed to help you build simple, sustainable routines that work with your body, not against it. We'll strip away the noise and get back to basics. Because that's where real, lasting change happens.
