My Profound Lesson from a Dentist Visit

Hey

I never expected to get such a profound lesson visiting the dentist but...

As I sat clutching the handles of the dentist's chair for dear life, it dawned upon me.

Yesterday, I underwent my first dentist check-up and cleaning since the onset of lockdown.

This was long overdue, given that I had moved to a new place, and the lockdown had persisted since my last check-up. It was high time for me to get one.

Though I diligently care for my teeth, a lingering worry always accompanies these visits – the fear of receiving bad news and having to undergo a tooth extraction or some other dental procedure.

However, to my relief, everything was in order. No signs of tooth decay, just a thorough cleaning is required.

Yet, this cleaning felt like someone vigorously scraping plaster off a wall, but inside my mouth. The dentist did an excellent job, but it was evident that he had to put in extra effort.

Four years can accumulate quite a bit of plaque.

As I tried to meditate and distract myself from the ordeal, I contemplated something important.

If only I ensured I had a hygiene check-up every six months or so, this experience wouldn't be half as daunting. Along with my regular brushing and flossing (which I need to do more consistently), I could spare myself pain and discomfort.

The same principle applies to those aiming to lose weight and enhance their cycling skills.

The longer you procrastinate taking that first step, the more challenging that initial journey becomes.

You end up holding on for dear life, doing everything possible to divert your attention from the discomfort.

And afterwards, you resolve not to go through it again anytime soon. Yet, by delaying the start, you only perpetuate this cycle.

So, I promptly scheduled my next check-up for six months from now, providing myself with accountability to stay on top of my dental health this time.

This same concept applies to your fitness journey. Once you take the first step, immediately book the next one. Sustain this progress, and soon enough, it becomes a routine. Remember, the longer you postpone the start, the tougher it gets to initiate.
