Balance, Rest, and Avoiding Burnout

Hey

Last week, I was riding high (literally and figuratively 😂) after crushing the Ride London 100. But little did I know, that euphoric feeling was about to come crashing down harder than a rookie cyclist on their first descent!

You see, I'd been battling a nasty cold leading up to the race, but being the stubborn mule that I am, I ignored all the warning signs and pushed through like a boss.

Turns out that was a rookie move because as soon as I crossed that finish line, my body just shut down completely.

Cue the runny nose, persistent cough, and a general feeling of tiredness and sluggishness that hit me like a freight train. To make matters worse, some family stress over the weekend had me feeling more drained than a cyclist's water bottle after a century ride in the desert!

Now, I know what you're thinking - just rest up and you'll be good to go! And you're absolutely right, my friends.

That's exactly what I'm doing - taking a much-needed break from cycling to let my body heal and repair itself. Because let's be real, a week or two off the bike ain't gonna make me lose all my hard-earned fitness, am I right?

But here's the thing: I've seen (and spoken to) way too many cyclists who treat rest like a four-letter word.

(This was me hiking the day after Ride London, maybe I should have rested 😂 )

They keep training through colds, injuries, and general fatigue, driven by this irrational fear of missing a single session.

They follow online plans like they're the gospel truth, without ever stopping to consider how their body actually feels.

And you know what happens next? Burnout city, population: them.

They end up quitting the sport altogether, all because they can't listen to their bodies screaming "TAKE A BREAK, YOU MANIAC!"

That's why I never, ever provide a generic, one-size-fits-all training plan to my clients. No that's not how I roll.

Every single plan is customized to their goals, time commitments, and unique challenges. We have regular video check-ins and one-on-one sessions to monitor their progress and understand how they're feeling, both mentally and physically.

Because the truth is, every training session, week, and month has a specific goal, even if that goal is just resting up to avoid burnout and stay healthy and injury-free.

By monitoring them closely, I can spot patterns before they do and help them understand their bodies better. That way, they gain the tools to be healthier, stronger, and more in tune with themselves, both on and off the bike.

So, let me ask you this: do you follow a plan blindly, or do you listen to your body's instincts?

Because let me tell you, ignoring those instincts is a surefire way to end up like me last week - a sniffling, coughing mess who could barely muster the energy to hike, let alone ride!

Look, I get it - you're a driven, passionate cyclist who wants to crush every goal and smash every PR. But trust me, my friends, rest and recovery are just as important as the training itself. Without them, you're setting yourself up for burnout, injury, and a whole lot of frustration.

That's why I'm inviting you to explore my coaching programs.

Together, we'll create a customized training plan that takes into account your unique needs, goals, and limitations. We'll monitor your progress closely, making adjustments as needed to ensure you're always pushing yourself just the right amount, without going overboard.

Most importantly, we'll prioritize rest and recovery, because let's be real - what good is all that training if you're too burnt out to enjoy the ride?

So, what do you say? Are you ready to take your cycling to the next level, while still listening to your body and avoiding burnout? Then explore my coaching options below.
