Happy Memorial Day, !
Hope you're enjoying this long weekend, and taking a moment to celebrate the service members in your life and reflect on the immense sacrifices made for our country. Regardless of how you feel about patriotism right now, the work and dedication of those who served before us remain undeniable. It's a day to wear our Red, White, and Blue with pride, honoring our fallen soldiers. If you are touched more personally, I am extra grateful for you and your family today. βοΈ
I don't come from a military family, and honestly, my connection to war and military life has always been pretty minimal. I have a few friends who are in the service and lead fascinating lives of travel. I've also been reading some great historical fiction lately (like the recommendation below!). But in my own family, the few who served rarely talk about it. Aside from official photos or a few gifts from "overseas," it's almost as if that part of their lives never happened. I've certainly never lost anyone close to me to war.
Yet, as I soak in this day off, so close to the end of the school year, I'm profoundly reminded of the freedom I have. It feels incredibly precious right now, and for that, I'm simply grateful. I'm going to honor that freedom the best way I know how: by staying whole and ready to walk into school tomorrow, giving my absolute best to the future of our society. This way, the kids in my classroom can learn to be productive, informed members of our world, especially in this ever-changing internet landscape. Whatever you choose to do today, do it with intention and joy. It's so important to be authentically you, because we all contribute exactly what we should to those around us. β€οΈπ

The Women by Kristin Hannah: A fantastic historical fiction novel about a nurse during the Vietnam War. It's packed with culture and history, and it's incredibly good. If you haven't read it, it definitely needs to be on your TBR list!
