When do you decide to quit?

#355 – When do you decide to quit?

If every decision you make is triggered by what happened in your brain in the seconds and minutes before it, you won't be able to will-power through the moment when Resistance comes knocking. Without a non-quitting plan, you'll give up.

I recently went back to running after an 18-month-long hiatus. This morning, during my second very boring and uncomfortable lap around the track, all sorts of reasons to quit came to my head: you can run tomorrow; what's that tingling in your ankle?; the gym's already open; you have so much to do...

Thinking back to my non-running months, I saw all the times I'd "negotiated against myself" precisely in the moments right before the decision––to run or not to run.

I also saw all the moments I didn't give room to that self-contest during my previous five years of 5-days-a-week running streak, come rain or shine––which, in Miami, is a feat in and of itself.

What prevented me from giving up on any of those 1,300 running days? I made the decision once that I wanted to run a half-marathon and then I never thought of it again. I just did it, on autopilot.

If there's no decision to be made in the moment, you don't risk deciding to quit. So, as the famous sports apparel brand put it, "just do it" is your plan to defeat Resistance.

What will you "just do" so you keep advancing towards your vision?
