Why won't your Ego drop the magnifying glass?

#346 – Why won't your Ego drop the magnifying glass?
If, like your Ego, you were obsessed with status and your ranking in society, you'd also scrutinize everything and everyone, including yourself, and ask: more or less than me?
A voice inside your head would transmit constant commentary about the world––especially what's wrong about it.
- As you walked by a big guy with a little dog––"a ridiculous combination"
- Seeing a boat bobbing in the Marina––"who spends that obscene amount of money on a boat" reveling in the disgust the thought makes you feel
- As a sports car sped by you––"the lengths some'll go to prove they're worthy"
- Crossing a young woman elegantly (and expensively) dressed––"clearly over-dressed"
- Etcetera
In all cases, your Ego has only one message: you're not safe unless you're on top, and you're not on top if others are higher than you.
So it makes you find ways to prove you're, in fact, higher: your pet fits better with you; you're more responsible with money; you don't need to prove your worth with expensive machines; you have better taste in dress. Etcetera.
Your Ego can't see "just a man with his dog," "just a boat," "just a car..." because it needs to make sure you have enough resources (money, love, and success) to survive.
But don't be mad at it: it's its job to protect you.
Let it have its shiny magnifying glass and scrutinize the world with it. Let it say what's good, bad, better, or worse.
Just don't pay attention. And when it insists you do, respond, "just tree," because a tree is just a tree, nothing more, nothing less.
What will you let be when you ignore your Ego's verdicts?
Love,
Carolina
