#279 – Does the universe make mistakes?

If you answer 'yes,' then you can only hope it doesn't when it comes to your life.

But if you answer 'no,' you're free.

I've questioned many of my decisions over the years: did I make a mistake when I moved to the US? When I spent north of $20K in a business that had no future? When I left a six-figure job? Why did I make those decisions that seem to have led to such underwhelming outcomes?

According to former professional poker player, author, and decision strategist Annie Duke, that's not the way to look at it. The fact that a decision leads to an outcome you didn't want, she says, doesn't make it a "bad" decision.

Then, what caused the outcome to turn out "bad," if the decision was right?

And, if I didn't make a mistake, since I had very good reasons to make those decisions, who (or what) did?

In a recent phone conversation with my son, I said, speaking about the event that put him in jail: "Yeah, maybe it's true you made a mistake going there in the first place, but..."

He cut me off: "There are no mistakes. If I went there it's because I needed this whole experience to learn something critical for my growth as a person."

His words instantly rearranged my thoughts, creating a sense of cosmic Tetris-like order. Everything made sense. All my why's had a simple answer: no reason.

Or, everything in the universe led me here.Thinking in chaos-theory terms, a butterfly might have flapped its wings in Australia the day I was born...

Taking that stance sets me free. I don't need to focus on getting perfect results when making a decision –– I just need to know in my gut that it's the right decision for me in the moment.

And if the outcome isn't what I wanted? I set myself free by accepting reality and surrendering to the moment in front of me, knowing that I'm here to serve it the best I can.
