#288 – Who benefits when Egos raise up in arms everywhere?

If personal boundaries that protect our emotional comfort are a growth blocker, physical boundaries that protect us from potential future threats are a community destroyer.

In both cases, the Ego is responsible. It does two things:

• It makes you scared of uncertainty (re: of life itself)
• It sells you on the idea that you need its protection.

Like a mafia patriarch, the Ego makes you "an offer you can't refuse:" first I shock you with chaos and destruction, and then I tell you that I can keep you safe.

Of course, it's all a scam––the same agent threatening your life is selling you the protection.

At the societal level, fear sells: the "panic industry" in America grows every year. Regular people are now investing huge amounts of money (up to $100 million, in the case of one family) in bunkers, fortified storage spaces, flammable moats, secret escape tunnels...

By buying into that industry, we're elevating the Ego to the all powerful rank of Fear-Agent in Chief.

But what if there were nothing to fear? Then, there's nothing to sell. The solution? Invent reasons to fear!

Fear the weather, fear other countries, fear the economy, fear other people (especially if they don't look like you). Fear the future.

Fear life itself.

But remember, "In my defenselessness my safety lies" (Lesson #153, A Course In Miracles).
