#190 – "Right" according to whom?
When you’re a rule-follower, you look for rules everywhere. If you go off-track, you fear you'll get you lost, so you seek out gurus and teachers to show you the “right” way – which, to your obedient mind, is the only way to success.
That’s what I did for years, spending time, money, and energy trying to learn the “right” way to teach voice, do research, write stories, run a business, or cook spaghetti. Was there a "right" way to do life?
Even if I didn’t shy away from learning things on my own, I always seemed to need someone to validate my trajectory – was this the “right” way?
Adam Moss's book, The Work of Art, obliterates the idea that there's a "right" way to do anything. Through interviews with 43 artists who have created something out of nothing, we get some refreshingly crucial ideas:
- There are no set rules for creating something remarkable
- Each creator creates in the way that feels "right" for them
- Struggling to create a piece doesn't mean the piece shouldn't be created
- Struggle is part of the creative process
What rules you may need to rethink or abandon to find what's truly "right" for you?
