Hello
Do you know how crucial P&IDs are in ensuring the success of your projects?
A P&ID is considered a key document in any project. This is because it reflects the data and process requirements based on PFD, sizing activities, and other requirements such as equipment maintenance and protection in order to be conveyed to the other engineering activities.
That's why it's highly important to ensure that the P&ID is reflecting all these requirements properly. Otherwise, this can cause lots of rework, project delay, and even cost impact.
For example
- If the pipe sizing yielded a 10" size, while there was a typo in the P&ID telling that the size was only 6", the piping team doesn't know anything about the piping calculation. This would mean that the wrong pipe size will be purchased.
- If steam tracing or no pocket symmetrical piping is required but not shown on the P&ID, the piping team might overlook it.
- Suppose that some additional interlock to protect piping from high pressure wasn't considered. This would also mean that at a late stage, we shall need to purchase new instruments, shutdown valves, or change the SIL rating of the current instruments. This would also lead to cost impact and project delay. Otherwise, the system will not be protected.
The above examples can cause one of these issues:
- These requirements shall be implemented at a late stage. This shall lead to project delay. In addition, this can cause a cost impact due to more material purchased, asking for early delivery or change orders charged by vendors, or more engineering manhours. This may also cause engineering issues if we are dealing with a system that is close to full construction, which may be difficult to implement.
- If these requirements were not still considered, and the plant started up without implementing these requirements, this can cause huge operational issues leading to off-spec products, system cannot be operated or even to safety issues if the system isn't well protected, which can cause lots of money due to frequent shutdowns and prolonged maintenance to solve these issues or even to accidents if this is a safety issue.
That's why a thorough review of P&IDs at all project stages is essential to avoid these pitfalls. However, given the complexity of P&IDs, spotting all necessary modifications can be challenging. The P&ID is full of details and it may be difficult to spot all comments or required modifications from the first time.
Here comes the role of a P&ID checklist.
A P&ID checklist, commonly used in engineering companies, ensures that P&IDs match quality and process guidelines, simplifying the review process based on standardized criteria.
In my new section of the P&ID course, I’ve developed a preliminary P&ID for a separator, pump, and heat exchanger. Applying the P&ID checklist revealed numerous comments. 😅
If you’re eager to learn more about P&ID guidelines and best practices, my P&ID course is on sale now for 2 days.
For a deeper dive into a process engineering career, consider my Process Engineering Masterclass. It includes the entire P&ID course and all my current process engineering courses. However, the course's main objective is to explain the process engineering career in detail and how each activity affects the project workflow. It's on sale for 1 day.
Ready to elevate your skills? It's time to start today!
Happy Learning!
