Need a fake boyfriend? 👨🏻‍❤️‍👨🏼

💛“Um, so, I told my grandpa I was living here, and he felt that I was taking the easy way out and not really doing what he asked, so I kind of told him—and everyone—that we’re… together.”

I choke on a breath. “What?”

“I know it was stupid, okay? But it just came out, and then Chuck, Evan, and Garrett jumped in to help me out. Everyone believed me, so—” He sighs, his gaze dropping to the floor. “It was stupid. I’ll tell them it was a lie—”

I grab his arm. “No. No, it’s fine. I… it’s fine. I’m just surprised.”

“Yeah, it surprised me too. I swear my mouth went rogue.” There’s a hint of vulnerability in his eyes mixed with relief.

I laugh a little. “It’s not… uh, I’m surprised because I didn’t realize you… weren’t straight.”

He blinks a few times, then barks out a laugh. “What? Seriously?”

“Yes. Whenever Micah and I would talk about guys we found hot, you never chimed in.”

“You two have big opinions. It was more fun to listen.”

“I’d only ever seen you date girls—on the rare occasion you dated.”

“Because those were all people my mom set me up with. She has horrible gaydar, and I banned her from setting me up with guys years ago after she tried to set me up with a straight friend of mine.”

“Oh. So you’re—”

“Bisexual. And I admit, I’m not loud about it, but that’s mostly because I’m not loud about anything in my life. I swear, I thought you knew. I’ve even flirted with you before—just having fun.”

“You—what? When?”

He laughs. “Seriously? All those times you’d say you have to feed me or I’d never eat. I’d always say something about how eating with you is better company or whatever. Asking you to dance at the wedding.” His lips pull flat. “Maybe I’m just shitty at flirting.”

“I didn’t even consider it because I thought you were straight. I feel like an idiot right now.”

“I think we’re both idiots, then.”

I slowly nod. Holy shit. All this time he’s been bisexual, and I didn’t even know it. And flirting with me? Have I not been paying attention? Did he actually want to kiss me at Micah and Miguel’s wedding? Everything that’s happened over the last few weeks, and specifically the last few days, roars through my brain. Many of our interactions since he moved in could be interpreted differently with this information.

My gaze drops to his lips and something stirs in my stomach. His breath hitches, and I’m suddenly very aware that my hand is still on his arm. The heat of his skin against my fingers might as well be burning me.

“Are you okay with this?”

“What?” I ask, sucking in a breath. I need to get some oxygen to my brain.

“Are you okay being my pretend boyfriend?”

“Oh.” I clear my throat, looking down at my hand on his arm. He follows my gaze, and there’s a long moment of tension that rapidly turns awkward. I remove my hand and shove it in the pocket of my hoodie. “I don’t mind. But we’ll have to come up with a story. Like how long we’ve been together—”

“Six months. That’s what I told them.”

“Okay. I can work with that, but I’ll have to text my family and let them know. Word travels fast around here, and there’s no way I can pretend I was lying to them all this time.” Especially with some of the conversations we’ve all had about what I want out of life. They’d have been irrelevant if I was seeing someone.

“Are you sure? We’d have to keep it up until after the anniversary celebration.”

“That’s fine. We live together anyway, so it’s not that big a deal.”

“They’re going to want you at our family dinners. My mom already requested that for next week.”

“I can do that. I’ll make sure I’m off on Friday nights from now on.” I’ve been considering quitting my job at Lamonte’s for a while now. This might be what I need to push me over the edge.

“Are you sure this won’t upend your life?”

“I’ll be fine. Most of my time is spent with my family, working, or here. For simplicity’s sake, I might tell my family we’re actually together and that we’re just lying to your family about how long.”

“Whatever you want to do. You’re doing me a huge favor.”

“I really don’t mind.”

I don’t. I was already thinking about how to explore my feelings for Ian without pushing him. Now that I know I could actually be an option for him? That he’s flirted with me before? This gives me a chance to be close to him without risking our friendship. And maybe it’ll let him see the same thing I’m wondering about—whether we could be a good match.💛
