Life, Death, and Living

No matter how much we want to deny it, we will have those we love die. We will have them grow up, get old, have kids, and change so that sometimes it feels like we are meeting strangers. But here's the thing, you still have to live and become your future you.

It is one of my problems with a lot of Urban Fantasy. Everything happens in a bubble. The characters don't change when some one dies or has kids or even moves away. And that isn't real We change every day. Maybe not for the good or maybe for the best, but we still change, and so should our characters.

That is why Cori changes between every book. What happened to her, her experiences, her friends, they are all growing up too. By the time the series is done I think she'll be in her fifties and have (I hope) a lot more wisdom. And I'm trying to remember the choices I made in my twenties, which are a lot different than the ones I'd make now. So keep watching as Cori continues her journey, and we all know it's the journey that matters, not the destination.

I'm older than I thought I'd ever be and I swear I still feel like an eighteen year-old not sure of who they want to be when they grow up. I figured best case I have another thirty years in me. So I'm working on writing as much as I can until I can't anymore. That being said I plan on giving you a lot more stories before I leave this mortal coil.

Since I have both My Luck and Hired Luck on audio I've been paying more attention to audio books lately. Well people I know making them that is. Here is one that just dropped by RJ Ladon who has some great stuff out.

Escape

The grooves from your mask will never fade. But you don't care, everyone has them. The new thing is to paint and color them for the few people who ever see your face. Somedays you wonder what color your eyes are, besides bloodshot. The ashes and the smoke insure you can't breath anywhere.

But today is your birthday, a day off. You have a book to read, someplace with trees and grass and animals and a blue sky. You even replaced your mask filter so you will get the freshest air possible.

Settling down in your one room flat, the sky scrapers of of New Dallas being build around you, blocking out more of the dirty sun, you crack open the precious book. The words flare to life and you forget at least for a few minutes that you're alone, in a world on fire, scared of human contact.

Now you ride a white horse across the plain, rescue a prince, save a kingdom, and dance under a star filled sky. You mouth waters at the idea of meat filled pasties, honey covered peaches, chocolate dipped in cream. You see yourself in clothes to save the day, fancy outfits to celebrate in, dark clothes to hide in the shadows.

You are happy, loved, wanted.

Then the alarm goes off and you turn to see your drab room, the never-ending construction, and that your book is almost half-finished.

Tears burn beneath your mask as you save the rest for another day.
