4 Ways to Make Your Coworkers Feel Included Without a DEI Course

Hello Dear Friends,
How are you doing?
I hope you're well.
I recently attend an interesting online Webinar on the topic of Racism and moving beyond bias.
And I wanted to share the thing that gave me pause for thought and that is about the duality of being human, wanting to do right and doing right in certain contexts and not all contexts.
The interesting insight shared was that we wear "professional" and "personal" persona's. And in the context of Racism or any "ism" bias, we behave with less bias in a "professional context" and when we take our professional hat off, we may allow ourselves "to have bias", because we feel that it's a personal choice or belief. The question to ask yourself is should you allow that incongruence or bias to exist, if you believe at the fundamental level that "ism" is wrong or should not exist.
And it made me reflect on my own position and I can definitely relate to having experienced this gap in my own behaviour.
To close the gap, we were introduced to the "Six Stages Framework", for personal development and growth in challenging our own biases.
And to help you close the inclusion gap in your workplaces, I am sharing a tip from my recently published article, 4 Ways to Make Your Coworkers Feel Included Without a DEI Course.
1. Create a space to be human and celebrate team members as individuals.
Make it a regular occurrence to celebrate team and individual success. A celebration here is not just meant in the context of a victory. It is also meant in the context of coming together to overcome a challenge, resolve a problem or meet a deadline. When celebrating team members, be specific and mention any challenges they overcame. Appreciate when a team member does something out of their comfort zone and recognize them genuinely amongst the team. Have a regular celebration or shout-out spot in your team meetings where all are encouraged to recognize each team member for their contribution.
