The cost of losing employee knowledge to "The Great Resignation!"

Hello Dear Friends,

How are you doing?

I am well! I have been on lovely ski holiday last week. I tell you this because I believe rest is important and you've not heard from me in a week!

I was commissioned by HR Zone to write a piece for their sister publication, "Training Zone" and my forthcoming piece is called, "Hidden Skills: Accelerating knowledge transfer and upskilling", which had me thinking about how important it is to retain knowledge in your organisation or company. Even if you're self-employed it applies, because as you scale and grow you'll need to share the knowledge of how you do things or want things to be done.

In this newsletter I'll be focussing on 3 ways for effective off-boarding! Yes, someone that's decided to leave and you now want to capture their knowledge. Here are my top 3 tips to retain knowledge from a leaving co-worker:

1 Retain their specialist knowledge or "Go to knowledge" painlessly!

The colleague who is leaving your organisation may have been the "go to person" for something, so allow them to capture their knowledge in short videos, documents or notes for their specialist knowledge. Get someone else to be tutored by them during their notice period, so they can "handover the torch" to someone else.

2 Invite them to run a brownbag IRL or Virtual Event to share their knowledge in a knowledge transfer Session

Ask the colleague that's leaving to hold a 1 Hour session where they share their knowledge, tutor or demonstrate the knowledge they are passing onto your team.

3 Recognise and incentive their Handover & Knowledge Transfer Effort

Everyone likes to receive praise and to be acknowledged for their effort. So make sure you say, "Thank you" and send them off with some kind of celebration event! Because they may decide to come back to your organisation or company at some point!

I hope that this new month has started well for you and your team. If your company or organisation has an ERG or internal networks, feel free to check out my free ERG Success Factors Resource: HERE

Warm Regards,
